Believe it or not, it’s the 15th anniversary of an iconic track from The Killers (a favorite band of mine and a favorite subject of this music & menswear newsletter), so that seems as fine a place as any to start today’s dispatch at The Style Guide In Brief. The track in question is “When You Were Young,” truly an epic singalong and one of the band’s most-loved songs. For me, this track first spoke to me nearly right after its release — like some of the other tracks and bands I love, I heard it both on the radio and also on, believe it or not, Guitar Hero. How quickly time flies, right?? I’ve revisited it a ton over the years (an understatement!), and I’d certainly rank it in my top 10 songs by The Killers. Feel free to leave your own top 10 in the comments below, too.
It’s a modern-day classic, and again, it’s hard to believe 15 years have passed since its release. With all that being said, let’s take a bit of a closer look at this track, to go along with a few more picks for your weekend. With your soundtrack figured out, the rest should be easy, right? Here we go once more.
What To Listen To This Weekend: “When You Were Young” By The Killers
Do you really need an excuse to listen to this unbeatable classic by the epic Las Vegas rockers? I should think not, but it’s as fitting a weekend as any to give it another spin if you haven’t given it a shot in a while. It’s a rousing song fit for a venue like the iconic Royal Albert Hall as showcased in the iconic video above. I’ve seen it myself live over the years at packed festivals like Lollapalooza, and it truly never gets old. I’ll be seeing the band in the flesh next week, fittingly enough, and it should be a standout show at Franklin Music Hall. My main point here? Give this classic song a listen this weekend, and your Saturday will be all the better for it. You know what else would make your weekend better? Why, a bit of menswear shopping, of course. You know the drill.
What To Shop This Weekend: Todd Snyder Brushed Flannel Shirt in Black
In an homage to the leading man in today’s newsletter, the incredibly well-dressed Mr. Brandon Flowers, this shirt is as fitting a style pick of the week as any. It’s got a bit of rock star edge and plenty of quality in terms of design and wearability, both on the road at a rock concert or at the office. How many shirts in your wardrobe can do that? Well, now you know at least one. I’m sure The Man himself would approve. As to the next entry in this weekend’s newsletter: All that shopping and classic listening tends to make one thirsty, does it not?
What To Sip This Weekend: Old Style Beer
Now, what does today’s featured pick have to do with our throwback track or our featured band from Las Vegas? Well, not all that much, but who said you can’t always use a cold beer when enjoying a favorite song on the weekend, right? I’ve started seeing Old Style, a classic Midwest beer, more and more places (including at a Midwest-focused bar in Washington, D.C. during a quick summer trip), and I’ll order it every chance I get. In that sense, it’s kind of like “When You Were Young” by The Killers — a track I listen to every chance I get. Cheers, my friends.
The Final Pick: Oak Street Bootmakers Trench Boots
Let’s get back into the spirit of menswear inspired by music, in a way, with this final pick. Now, if you’ve watched The Killers play live, you know that one Brandon Flowers prefers (most often) a pair of stylish lace-up boots onstage, kind of like the rugged and fall-ready Oak Street Bootmakers Trench Boots (as sold by Huckberry). Now, we can’t all dress precisely like the legendary frontman, but I’d say these boots are a fine start.
Does it get any better for a weekend than a favorite throwback track and a few “new-but-old” favorites (like the throwback-inspired Oak Street Bootmakers Trench Boots, for example?). Not quite, and when you add in a throwback beer like a cold can of Old Style Beer — to go along with your retro soundtrack — I’d call that the perfect weekend to-do list right there. What are your thoughts? Be sure to let me know in the comments, and be sure to tell all your friends about The Style Guide In Brief.
