Well, here we are — Saturday morning after some very intense days of reckoning in this country. Terrifying and sad and scary days, on top of quite literally, everything else going on across the globe, down the street … everywhere. If you’re in the same boat as me, perhaps you’ve found it mighty difficult to tackle your to-do list as the chaos swirls incessantly.
That’s why today, I’m going to (once again) take a step back from the usual menswear-music-craft beer format of this newsletter, at least for the weekend. Of course, my style blog offers up a brief respite from the outside world, in its own way. However, I’ll offer up two recommendations: You should listen to the song that inspired today’s headline, the deeply emotional and mysterious track “Moonbeams” by The Family Band. Seeking solace in music has been helpful for me in its own way — how about you?
As to my second recommendation: You should head to the very source that clued me into the aforementioned song: The excellent, passionately written, deeply meaningful (and yes, prescient and oft-saddening) Substack newsletter Welcome to Hell World by Luke O’Neil. Whatever ails you, however passionately you feel about the state of this country, all written in a unique way, can be found in his terrific and moving newsletter. Luke gets it, and it’s frustrating that so much of what he writes about has been going on for years and years and years. He even wrote a book of the same name, much of it developed during the horrifying administration we’re all living through at the moment, and that book is also worth your time.
It’s tough to find a light at the end of the tunnel these days, but there are good people out there fighting for a better future — let’s all try to be one this weekend, yes? See ya next week.
