We’re hot on the heels of New York Fashion Week, a big-time week for me over on my main coverage beat (that’d be menswear — check out my bylines here, my friends). In fact, I talked a bit about the goings-on over at my daily style blog, The Style Guide, so head on over there for all your fall style and shopping needs. In the meantime, I’m offering up a shorter dispatch in the interest of knocking out some other post-fashion week deadlines (similar to my Tuesday newsletter). Of course, I’ll also be taking time to kick back and “enjoy the view,” as Scottish post-punk rockers We Were Promised Jetpacks intone in the band’s latest album (that’s the cover at the top of the page). And I’ll be spinning my WFH playlist on Spotify — give it a follow below! But back to “Enjoy the View” by WWPJ.
That album is a big part of the reason we’re here today, as it were: I reviewed that album for independent music Web site Atwood Magazine, in my first feature for the site! I also had a terrific chat with lead singer Adam Thompson, virtually (from Edinburgh for Adam), and that Q&A will run soon over at Merry-Go-Round Magazine — feel free to support MGR through its Patreon program, every bit helps! So, that’s my listening pick for your weekend: A mature and evolved record from a band best known for crafting emotional hooks and stirring lyrics (just listen to “Quiet Little Voices,” for starters). As to the rest of your weekend, some more quick-hit picks are below!
What to Shop This Weekend: Now, I talked about this in my Friday blog post over at my regular, daily style blog, but you’d do well to layer up the right way for fall with a sweater from Buck Mason.
What to Sip This Weekend: Join me in imbibing a fresh, surprisingly well-balanced pumpkin ale from Elysian Brewing — these are available far and wide (wherever you get great beer), but you can also get beer delivered via Drizly. Cheers!
Another listening recommendation: The track “Running Up That Hill” by Canadian indie trio Ellevator — I wrote about the band over at The Line of Best Fit, and am ever-so-impressed with what I’m hearing. It’s perfect for fans of Spoon, Feist or any mid-aughts rock and pop. Again, cheers!
That’s all I’ve got for you this weekend. Remember to take time to enjoy the view, preferably with a cold beer in hand and WWPJ playing on your Bluetooth speaker. Thanks for reading and we’ll see you next week!
