My friends: Doesn’t the headline today say it all? Can you feel it — or rather, not feel that weight on your back or your chest or in your heart any more? This isn’t a political newsletter, but “My God” by The Killers (today’s featured song) accurately describes, well, everything at the moment … does it not? If you know, you know — and I think we all know. It’s a feeling that comes in waves, as evidenced by celebrations all across NYC this past weekend. Brooklyn’s weather has taken a turn for the sunny and warm, if briefly, and music sounds better, beer tastes better (yes, it’s possible!) and even old wardrobe staples are looking … cooler and more stylish? Sure thing, and we’ll talk a bit about each today. It’s Tuesday, it’s a new week and a new edition of The Style Guide In Brief awaits. If you want a full dose of daily men’s style content, head to the main event — my blog, The Style Guide — or give me a follow on Instagram. For now, a weight has indeed been lifted. Let’s keep it that way today! Below, find out what you should be spinning, wearing and sipping this week.
What To Listen To This Week: “My God” By The Killers
For me, there might not be a song I’ve listened to on repeat as of late quite like “My God” by Vegas rock icons The Killers. While the song itself isn’t *quite* about the current political climate, some of Mr. Brandon Flowers’ lyrics are too fitting. It helps that the standout track (off this past August’s truly astounding “Imploding The Mirage”) features soulful, rich backing vocals from the extraordinary ladies of Lucius, as well as a terrific feature from alt-pop singer Weyes Blood. It’s just a damn fine song, with a jaunty bass line, pulsing synths, thundering drums at points and of course, Mr. Flowers’ ever-classic vocal delivery. Heck, it’s a song I positively can’t wait to see live (in the summer of 2021!?), and as I’ve said before, it’s definitely my number one song of the past handful of days. And it’s worth noting that it sounds like a track that might fit nicely on 2008’s “Day and Age” — and that’s just … too awesome, is it not?? One final note: So as not to clutter things up too much, you should certainly check out my past newsletter entries on songs like “Caution” and “Dying Breed” off this year’s new LP.
What To Wear This Week: 3Sixteen Type-3 Lightweight Denim Jacket via UNCRATE
Past newsletters featuring the music of The Killers have covered some decidedly Brandon Flowers-inspired menswear pieces, so let’s keep that theme rolling along nicely today. The man himself favors astoundingly cool outerwear and tailoring onstage, and as you might very well know, he’s got a thing for an Alexander McQueen denim jacket that’s appeared regularly in his rotation through the years. With all that being said, this classic denim jacket from the standout denim purveyors at 3Sixteen checks all the right boxes if you want a casual and cool layer to team with grey selvedge denim and your favorite white T-shirt. As I always say, that’s certainly a look I would wear to a rock concert, preferably by The Killers … later next summer! Here’s hoping, but it’s never too early to prepare.
What To Sip This Week: Allagash White via Drizly
While Brandon Flowers himself doesn’t drink these days, we’re going to feature a beer today that was in fact the first brew I had following Saturday’s *news*, and it tasted all the better for it. Allagash White, out of Maine’s famed Allagash Brewing Company, is an all-season sipper that never fails to impress me, especially when served fresh on tap at a Brooklyn beer bar. The rest of the time, it’s pretty neat that you can get this incredible witbier delivered to your door via alcohol delivery service Drizly. That’s a winning move in my book, made all the better if you listen to “My God” by The Killers as you wait for your next delicious craft beer to arrive.
The Final Pick: Shoe The Bear Arnie Leather Chelsea Boots via Bespoke Post
Sometimes, I look at my wardrobe and I think, “If I were Brandon Flowers, what I would wear?” — it’s a blessing and a curse, because it leads me to covet wardrobe additions like these stylish black leather Chelsea boots available at Bespoke Post. If you’re a fan of the band, you know the famed lead singer teams up sharp black boots with tailoring onstage (in the Before Times!), and this pair might just be the ticket if you want a bit of rock star style for yourself. It helps that they’re priced under $200 and are available in time for fall and winter weather. And as ever, you should keep them handy for your next rock concert (whenever that happens to be!).
We’re going to close the curtain on today’s edition of The Style Guide In Brief with optimism and hope in the air. Also in the air? For me, of course, “My God” by The Killers is certainly going to be in heavy rotation on the music front. In my fridge, I hope to get my hands on some Allagash White soon enough, and perhaps I’ll even consider adding, say, another classic denim jacket to my rotation. If you’re onboard with that approach, then you should swing back through for Saturday’s newsletter dispatch. Until then!
