Thanks for joining me here for another dispatch of my (mostly) twice-weekly music and menswear newsletter, which is different (but somewhat the same) as my daily style blog from which it gets its name. Thanks for reading!
Maybe it’s the chilly (and personally, much-loved) fall weather in Brooklyn — or San Francisco last weekend — or the sudden onset of early darkness, but there’s one artist I’ve been returning to quite frequently in the old HQ. Maybe you feel the same way? And perhaps it boils down to the fact that I saw her play an impassioned show at Outside Lands in San Francisco last weekend, but my artist of choice and my recommended pick for some Sunday listening is Sharon Van Etten, long-running indie rocker who’s quietly built one of the best bodies of work in the genre. I wrote in my Outside Lands festival preview for indie publication Atwood Magazine that she’d be an artist to watch, and more than a week later, I still feel that way.
Just as I’ve been breaking out my flannel shirts and leather boots once again, I’ve been returning to Van Etten’s stellar 2019 album Remind Me Tomorrow, off of which we’ve been graced with the passion that is cult hit “Seventeen,” not to mention the aptly titled, synth-heavy “Comeback Kid.” The album is enough to give you a jolt of emotion and passion on a dreary, dark day, so settle in, listen and keep scrolling for the rest of my fall recommendations.
What To Listen To (The Rest Of) This Weekend: Remind Me Tomorrow By Sharon Van Etten
That’s right — I’m recommending you put this full album into your rotation in quick succession, because there’s a reason it’s such a strong record top to bottom. Van Etten delivers a wonderful live performance, capturing the Outside Lands crowd on a gloomy day with tracks off this record (“Seventeen,” a letter to her former, younger self) is a particular favorite. It’s also worth noting that Van Etten’s developed quite the discography across more than a decade of releasing records, even working with esteemed producer Aaron Dessner of The National. But before you dive in all the way back to the early 2010s, I’d wager this beautiful, frequently emotional and diverse record paints as strong a picture as any of where her career is going. I seriously enjoyed her set at Outside Lands, gloomy and chilly as it was. Of course, it helped that I was outfitted properly — finally — for a festival, as I’ve written about so often in this newsletter. What brand did I favor for the San Francisco weekend? I’m glad you asked…
What To Shop Right Now: Taylor Stitch Ojai Jacket
Seeing as Taylor Stitch, long one of my favorite brands, is based in San Francisco, it only made sense to bring along the company’s hard-working gear for my trip out West. The Taylor Stitch Ojai Jacket in particular is a neat hybrid between a blazer and a shirt jacket, made with rich, warm corduroy and featuring plenty of pockets. It proved an apt choice to wear as I snapped photos and trekked between festival stages (by the time I saw Sharon perform on Friday afternoon, temperatures had dropped into the high 50s). For your next day out and about near the water or in San Francisco, consider layering up with Taylor Stitch.
What To Sip Right Now: Anchor Steam Beer
Yes indeed, I’m urging you to close out your weekend (or ring in Monday happy hour tomorrow) with another San Francisco classic, one with considerably more history than Taylor Stitch. That’s not a bad thing — Anchor Brewing, bought by Fritz Maytag in 1965, has been at the forefront of the craft beer revolution for decades. The craft beer world, to put it lightly, wouldn’t be the same without Anchor Brewing or utterly classic beers like Anchor Steam Beer, a deep amber brew done in the California Common style. Don’t let the vernacular fool you, though — you can get it year-round, and it’s both rich and malty yet easy to drink (especially for just $5 at the brewery itself). Aside from being onsite at the brewery, Anchor Brewing delivers its fine beers via delivery service Drizly, of course. Cheers!
The Final Pick: Taylor Stitch Chukka Boots
For my final selection in today’s San Francisco-inspired newsletter, I simply had to go back to the well and offer up another super-stylish entry from my friends at Taylor Stitch. In addition to handsome and rugged outerwear, the much-loved brand now does quite the job at crafting some of the best leather boots on the market, the kind you can wear to a festival or to the bar without missing a beat, pun intended (I’ve done both with mine!). The best part is, these chukka boots will get better the more you wear ‘em.
OK, so you might not be hitting the road to San Francisco anytime soon, but for one, I can’t recommend the Outside Lands Music Festival enough (hopefully, my review paints an accurate picture!). And beyond that, I can’t recommend some of my favorites from the festival enough, and the good news is, you can listen to their music any time at all. So, throw on some Sharon Van Etten to while away the rest of this night and the start of a new week. Consider layering up for chilly fall weather with the Taylor Stitch Ojai Jacket, and step into the Taylor Stitch Chukka Boots as you hit the streets in search of grabbing a fresh Anchor Steam Beer. What could be better, right? If you like what you hear or if you love what ends up in your wardrobe from this dispatch, let me know in the comments. Thanks for reading!
